She painted each bone of the skull in separate colors that helped the students distinguish what they read in a textbook, and it helped them make sense of the professor's lecture in the class. She's painted skulls for three different types of species for canines, horses and cows.

"I took it from having it be just the individual bones painted, to having all the little holes on the skull painted," she said. "There's all kinds of holes in the skulls for the nerves and blood vessels to get to and from the brain. But they all look the same and are all lumped together, and students need to know what passes through them, from the brain to the body or from the body to the brain."

Baseball: Bradley-Bourbonnais captures All-City win
In the bottom of the fifth, before Bradley-Bourbonnais' Trey Blair stepped into the batter's box to face McNamara's Sam O'Connor, BBCHS head coach Kevin Arthur pulled him aside.

"I told him, 'Hey. You have to get on base. If you get on base, we win,'" Arthur said.

Arthur's words turned out to be prophetic. Blair hit a line drive between the shortstop and second baseman for a single and then crossed home plate on Ryan Jemar's hit. Blair's run was the game-winner in a 2-1 Boilermaker victory over All-City rival Bishop McNamara.

On one side, McNamara's lineup is, from top to bottom, possibly the most potent in the area. Anchored by top-notch hitters such as Shelby Stauffenberg and Caitlin Engelking, the Irish can hit the ball, and there isn't a player anywhere in the order that's not capable of hurting an opposing pitcher.

And on the other side, Reed-Custer ace Kenna Wilkey is an elite hurler who combines electric fastballs with devastating offspeed stuff that can reduce even the best hitter to a flailing mess.

Chicago Cubs Win World Series
The Cubs needed a veteran in the clubhouse to teach their seemingly endless supply of budding young stars, someone who'd been there. Who'd done that. Who cared little about curses or droughts. Who knew what Maddon wanted and how to translate it.

Zobrist, fresh off a World Series title with the Kansas City Royals, was searching for a place to spend the final years of a consistently fine career. What better place to do it than a 2-hour drive from where he grew up in central Illinois in Eureka and then later moved closer to Chicago as he shined at Olivet Nazarene University.

"We see this all the time. The damn spoon and the needle," Kankakee County Coroner Bob Gessner said. He was at the State's Attorney's Citizens Academy to make sure people knew: Kankakee County has a problem. With 35 overdose deaths last year and 17 already on the books since December, heroin is never far from his mind.

Representatives from the State's Attorney's office and the Kankakee Area Metropolitan Enforcement Group joined Gessner on Wednesday night to discuss the county's drug crisis.

Republicans say they would work on a budget deal
Republicans say they would work on a budget deal
Illinois has been without a state budget for about two years. That breakdown is caused by strongly held opposing viewpoints from Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and powerful Democratic Illinois Speaker of the House Michael Madigan, who has the votes to block any Republican proposal.

Durkin is the Republican Minority Leader in the House. A 17-year veteran of the Illinois Legislature, he has been the Republican House leader since 2013. Durkin also is noteworthy as the state chairman for the John McCain Presidential Committee and for running as the Republican Senatorial nominee in 2002.

Tigers earn comeback win over Bobcats in nail-biter
The back-and-forth affair lived up to the accompanying hype — Herscher pulled off an exciting comeback win, eclipsing the Bobcats in the bottom of the sixth before Post slammed the door in the seventh — but the road they took to get there was rockier than expected for both squads.

Beecher was uncharacteristically shaky on defense while Herscher was simultaneously overaggressive and lackadaisical on the base paths.

MUSIC OF THE CIVIL WAR
MUSIC OF THE CIVIL WAR
In the 1850s, the decade leading up to the Civil War, music was heard and played everywhere in the country. Classical pieces, opera, dances, religious music, band music, and blackface minstrel songs permeated the culture. Parlor pianos everywhere rang out sentimental ballads, with the music of Stephen Foster the most prominent.

When the Civil war broke out in April, 1861, the country was primed and ready for a musical explosion of patriotism and emotional expression. Publishers poured out an amazing variety of war music beginning with George F. Root's The First Gun is Fired, published only three days after the bombardment of Fort Sumter. From that day, countless songs on many subjects were published daily over the next four years.

The elusive long-eared owl
The elusive long-eared owl
While working at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie this past week, I got a tip from Forest Service ecologist Bill Glass that some owls had been visiting a part of the grassland.

With a general search area in mind, I set out with camera in hand. I don't really see owls all that much, and the ones I do are mostly seen flying fast away from me.
